Xbox Lets You Convert Physical Games to Digital

Xbox has quietly been working toward something that makes a lot of practical sense: a way to turn the games sitting on your shelf into digital versions you can play anytime, anywhere. The company just announced a disc-to-digital conversion program that's rolling out to Xbox Insiders starting August 31, with plans to expand to all Xbox users down the line.

Here's how it works. If you own a physical copy of an Xbox One or Series X/S game, you'll be able to convert it to a digital version through this program. Thousands of titles are eligible, which is a pretty substantial library to work with. Once converted, your game lives in your digital library, playable on any of your devices—including the Series S, which doesn't have a disc drive at all.

It's the kind of feature that solves a real problem for players. Physical media takes up space, discs can get scratched or lost, and if you're moving between consoles or want to play on the go, digital is just simpler. For Xbox Insiders, this started at the end of August. Everyone else will get access later, though Xbox hasn't specified exactly when.
