The film opens in Japan on September 25. It's already made the festival circuit: We Are Aliens screened at Cannes and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with additional screenings scheduled for Ottawa, Melbourne, and New Zealand International Film Festivals.
The project had solid backing before release. A crowdfunding campaign exceeded its target, raising over 9.6 million yen. The film's theme song, "Sasakure," is performed by adieu.
This is a film that's already traveled. The international festival presence and crowdfunding success suggest real momentum heading into its domestic release.
