Ninja Scroll 4K Remaster Hits 600 North American Theaters This October

The 1993 classic Ninja Scroll is getting a theatrical second life. A 4K remaster of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's landmark film will screen across approximately 600 theaters in the United States and Canada on October 4, 5, and 7, 2026, with tickets already on sale through HIDIVE and Iconic Events Releasing.

The restoration is no casual upscale. Sentai supervised the project by scanning the original 35mm film negative at 4K resolution, then performed frame-by-frame damage repair to rebuild the image from scratch. The result is a digital master that preserves the film's original detail while cleaning decades of wear.

The three-day rollout offers flexibility: October 4 screens the English subtitled version, October 5 presents the English dub, and October 7 theaters can show either format depending on their preference. This matters for a film that shaped how Western audiences encountered anime action in the 1990s—Ninja Scroll was a gateway drug for many, and the dub remains culturally significant in its own right.

For anyone who caught this on VHS or DVD, the 4K presentation will be visibly different. Kawajiri's hand-drawn animation, the fluid combat sequences, and the film's deliberately grotesque character designs all benefit from the restoration's clarity. The original negative scan captures detail that home video formats simply couldn't resolve.
