Over a decade after Murciélago first launched in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine, the dark manga series by Kana Yoshimura is finally heading to animation. NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan announced the adaptation at Anime Expo, confirming that the anime will arrive in 2027 with exclusive streaming rights going to HIDIVE across the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.

The production brings together a solid creative team. Matsuo Asami will direct at studios Satelight and Staple Entertainment, while Takashi Naoya serves as chief director and handles series composition. Character design duties fall to Sei Tateishi, who will translate Yoshimura's distinctive visual style to screen.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, Murciélago has built a devoted following since its 2013 debut—the kind of series that's been waiting for the right moment and the right team to make the leap to animation. The announcement itself is a signal that the manga's particular brand of storytelling has found enough traction to justify the investment.
