Marvel Pivots to Ghost Rider, Shelves Blade for 2028

Marvel Studios is officially pivoting away from Blade. Instead of continuing to chase the long-delayed Mahershala Ali project, the studio has greenlit a Ghost Rider reboot—and it's bringing some serious star power to the supernatural side of the MCU.

Ryan Gosling will play Johnny Blaze, the Spirit of Vengeance himself, with Shawn Levy directing. The film is locked in for 2028, positioning Ghost Rider as the launchpad for Marvel's supernatural slate in Phase 7.

This is a major shift. Blade has been in development limbo for years, with the project repeatedly delayed and reshaped. Pivoting to Ghost Rider signals that Marvel is ready to move forward on its darker, more occult-leaning properties—just with a different character leading the charge.

Gosling and Levy's pairing is notable. Levy has proven his ability to balance spectacle with character work across his filmography, and Gosling brings a different energy than what Ali was likely to deliver. This Ghost Rider will occupy its own space in the MCU's supernatural universe, which has been quietly building through properties like the Midnight Sons roster.

For fans who've been waiting on a proper Ghost Rider film, this is the move. For Blade devotees, the question now is whether Ali's version ever makes it to screen, or if Marvel has quietly shelved it entirely in favor of this new direction.
