Kenji Kamiyama Directs New Gundam Anime for 2027

Bandai Namco Filmworks has greenlit Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new TV anime directed by Kenji Kamiyama, set to premiere in 2027. The announcement came at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 as part of the broader RG Project, a multimedia initiative that binds the anime to the upcoming game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT within a shared timeline.

The anime takes place 100 years before the events of the game, establishing the historical foundation for that narrative. Ray Azumi, the main character, will be voiced by Takeo Otsuka. Production is being handled by SOLA ANIMATION, with Toh EnJoe contributing to the project.

Kamiyama's involvement signals a significant creative commitment—the director has helmed major anime properties and brings a track record of building cohesive, layered worlds. Tying the anime directly to a game's narrative is an increasingly common strategy in franchise building, but the century-long gap between the two timelines suggests the anime will function as genuine prequel worldbuilding rather than a simple tie-in.
