Gundam Crushes Doraemon's Robot in Giant Mecha Showdown
Gundam triumphs in a giant robot poll, beating Doraemon's Zanda Cross.
The Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam has claimed the top spot in Anime! Anime!'s survey of favorite giant robots, pulling in approximately 11% of votes and decisively outpacing the competition.
The survey ran from September 8 to September 13 and drew responses from a diverse age range, though male participants made up the majority. Zanda Cross from Doraemon: Nobita and the Steel Troops landed in second place with about 4% support—a significant gap that underscores just how dominant the original Gundam remains in the collective memory of mecha fans.
The results span decades of robot anime, pulling entries from the 1970s through the 2020s. The breadth of the field makes Gundam's lead all the more striking: it faced competition from a sprawling roster that included everything from GaoGaiGar and God Mars to more recent entries, yet still commanded nearly three times the support of its nearest rival.
The takeaway is clean. Fifty years after its debut, Mobile Suit Gundam remains the gravitational center of giant robot fandom—not through nostalgia alone, but through a cultural footprint so deep that newer and flashier mecha haven't managed to displace it.
