Evangelion's Asuka & Rei Get the Heirloom Doll Treatment
Asuka Langley Soryu gets a luxurious, traditional Japanese doll makeover from Yoshitoku.
Yoshitoku, a traditional Japanese doll maker, has partnered with Rebuild of Evangelion to produce a 1/4 scale figure of Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami dressed as a Japanese doll in full kimono. The collaboration treats the character with the craft standards of classical doll-making: real fabric, intricate detail work, and the kind of finish you'd expect from a piece meant to sit in a display case for decades.
The figures will run you 198,000 yen (roughly $1,300 USD), and pre-orders open July 25, 2026, closing September 15, 2026. Release is set for July 2027. That's a long lead time, but it tracks for a handcrafted piece of this scale and material quality.
What makes this interesting isn't just the novelty of these characters in traditional dress—it's the collision of two entirely different traditions. Yoshitoku has been making dolls since 1711. Evangelion is a 30-year-old psychological mecha series that redefined anime. Putting Asuka and Rei through the lens of classical Japanese doll aesthetics is a genuinely odd and kind of charming move. The figures sit somewhere between collectible figurine and heirloom craft object, which is either exactly what you want or completely not your thing.
