Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are bringing Akira back to theaters in a way that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. The landmark cyberpunk anime will hit select theaters across the U.S. and Canada on September 4 in 4K and IMAX formats—a theatrical presentation befitting Katsuhiro Ōtomo's visually stunning 1988 film.

Viewers will have their choice of experience: the film screens in both Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub, giving audiences flexibility depending on their preference. For a movie this influential, the 4K restoration should reveal details that may have been lost in previous home video releases, while the IMAX presentation transforms the film's intricate cityscapes and kinetic action sequences into an immersive experience.

The re-release arrives as Akira continues to cast a long shadow over anime and science fiction more broadly. Ōtomo's directorial vision—the dense, cyberpunk world of Neo-Tokyo and its motorcycle-riding protagonist Tetsuo—remains a touchstone for creators working in the medium decades later. The film's influence extends far beyond anime fandom into mainstream cinema and visual culture.

Otomo himself has remained active in the industry. He recently founded a new feature animation studio called OVAL GEAR in Tokyo, signaling continued ambition in the animation space even as his earlier works receive renewed theatrical attention.
