Tenkaichi Anime Lands April 2027 Release With Star-Studded Cast
The Tenkaichi anime, with a star-studded cast, is set for an April 2027 release.
Studio Fugaku has locked in the creative team for Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun, an alternate-history anime set in 1600s Japan. The first trailer and visual dropped with the announcement that the series will premiere in April 2027.
Director Masashi Abe is helming the project, which adapts the manga by Yosuke Nakamaru and illustrator Kyotaro Azuma. The voice cast reads like a who's who: Gen Sato voices Miyamoto Musashi, Kenichiro Matsuda plays Honda Tadakatsu, and Kenyu Horiuchi takes on Oda Nobunaga—three of Japan's most storied historical figures, reimagined for this fictional take on the era.
The setup is straightforward: a what-if story built around legendary warriors, grounded in recognizable names but freed from historical constraint. That's the appeal of alternate history done right—you get the texture of a real period without being bound by it. The cast suggests the production is betting on character work as much as spectacle, which tracks for a series centered on warrior narratives.
With nearly three years until release, Studio Fugaku has time to build. The first materials are in the wild now; whether the full series lands as promised in spring 2027 will tell you something about the studio's pipeline and ambition. For now, the announcement is solid: a director with a track record, a recognizable voice ensemble, and a premise that doesn't require you to already know the source material to get what it's selling.
