Clockwork Girl Hits Digital in September After Japan Theater Run

Yasuomi Umetsu and studio SHAFT's Clockwork Girl is coming to digital purchase in September, following its theatrical debut in Japan last June and U.S. screenings in November courtesy of Aniplex of America and Fathom Entertainment.

The original anime topped mini-theater rankings in Japan before expanding stateside. Set in 2099, it follows bounty hunter Ubu Kamigori navigating a world where advanced medical android technology has become a tool for crime—a premise that trades the usual cyberpunk aesthetics for something more grounded in the mechanics of exploitation.

Umetsu's fingerprints are all over this: the director has spent decades mining the space between hard sci-fi and character-driven storytelling, and SHAFT's visual precision pairs well with that sensibility. The fact that it cleared both Japanese and American theatrical runs suggests the film found an audience willing to sit with a concept that doesn't rely on franchise recognition or spectacle alone.

Digital availability in September means the film moves from limited theatrical windows to permanent home access—the standard play for anime that performs well but doesn't sustain multiplex runs. For viewers who missed the November U.S. screenings, this is the entry point.
