Wai Ching Ho, Madame Gao of Marvel's Daredevil, Dies at 83
Wai Ching Ho, who played Madame Gao in Marvel's Netflix series, has died at 83.
Wai Ching Ho, the actress who brought menacing gravitas to Madame Gao across Marvel's Netflix universe, has died at 83 following a stroke. Her family confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ho's portrayal of the enigmatic Hand operative became one of the most memorable antagonistic presences in the Marvel TV era, appearing across Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. Madame Gao was the kind of villain who commanded every scene she inhabited—quiet, calculated, and genuinely unsettling. Her work in that role demonstrated a rare ability to make restraint feel threatening.
But Ho's career extended far beyond the Marvel universe. Over five decades in entertainment, she accumulated an impressive range of credits: guest spots on Law & Order, a role in Orange is the New Black, appearances in Flight of the Conchords and New Amsterdam, and more recently, a part in Only Murders in the Building. In 2022, she lent her voice to Grandma Wu in Pixar's Turning Red, introducing her to a new generation of viewers.
Her family expressed gratitude for the support and messages that came following her passing, acknowledging the impact she'd made across her decades of work. For many viewers, Ho will remain inseparable from Madame Gao—a character who proved that some of the most effective villains aren't the loudest ones in the room.
