New Clip Released for Sumikko Gurashi Film

The official X/Twitter account for the anime films of San-X's Sumikko Gurashi franchise has shared an exciting clip from the upcoming film Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko (The Sky Kingdom and the Two Children). This is the fourth film in the beloved franchise and the clip was released on Friday.

Clip Highlights

In the clip, we see the adorable Sumikko characters play the "sacred flowers" to create a sweet melody, conducted by a quirky penguin-like creature. Following the clip, there's a trailer featuring Kaela Kimura's enchanting theme song, "Kimi no Kasa" (Your Umbrella).

Film Details

This installment is directed by Naomi Iwata (known for Pingu in the City), and features returning narrators Yoshihiko Inohara and Manami Honjō. Takashi Sumita is back as the scriptwriter, while Kaori Hino returns as art director. The film is set to hit theaters on October 31.

Franchise Background

Since its debut in 2012, Sumikko Gurashi has charmed audiences with its unique characters who prefer to stay in the corners of rooms. Notable characters include:

  • Shirokuma: A shy polar bear sensitive to cold.
  • Penguin?: A questioning penguin unsure of its own identity.
  • Tonkatsu: An uneaten piece of pork cutlet.
  • Neko: A timid cat.
  • Tokage: A dinosaur in disguise.

The first anime film, released in November 2019, made waves, selling over 1.2 million tickets and earning approximately 1.4 billion yen (about US$12.8 million). It won the Best Animation of the Year at the 29th Annual Japan Movie Critics Awards in June 2020.

The second film launched in November 2021, and the third film followed suit in November 2023, continuing to delight fans of the franchise.
