Star Wars: Starfighter: An Original Tale Beyond the Saga
In a recent interview, director Shawn Levy clarified that Star Wars: Starfighter is distinctly different from previous entries in the saga, confirming it is neither a sequel nor a prequel. This new adventure introduces entirely new characters and explores a brand-new timeline, separate from the established lore of the Star Wars universe.
Levy stated, "It is an all-new non-sequel, non-prequel adventure. It inherits legacy themes, but it's really trying to give Star Wars fans something fresh, something new."
Creative Freedom and Collaboration
Levy expressed gratitude for the creative freedom afforded to him by Lucasfilm. He aims to capture a tone reminiscent of A New Hope, providing fans with a sense of playfulness and adventure. He noted the presence of his 10-year-old self on set, emphasizing the fulfillment of his longtime dream to contribute to the Star Wars franchise.
"We're really trying to sort of take that tone as a North Star every day," he remarked. Ryan Gosling plays a significant role, alongside a talented cast including Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams. The story is centered around a Force-sensitive teen, with Gosling rumored to portray their uncle, who becomes a protector against villains portrayed by Goth and possibly Matt Smith.
A Unique Addition to the Franchise
Although it will not directly connect to the Skywalker Saga, Starfighter will take place several years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Levy described the experience as surreal and exciting, affirming that this opportunity aligns with his respect for the Star Wars legacy while allowing for an original narrative to unfold.
As production continues and anticipation builds, fans are eager to see how this new chapter in the saga unfolds. With a release date set for May 28, 2027, Star Wars: Starfighter promises to be a compelling and refreshing entry into the beloved series.
