Dark Horse Comics has revealed an exciting five-page preview of The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga. This new hardcover collection showcases art boards from Hisao Tamaki's adaptation of the iconic film, making it the first Star Wars manga published. A Kickstarter campaign launched on Tuesday aims to fund this highly anticipated project.

Backers can choose from a variety of editions:

  • Collector's Edition: Two-volume hardcover set with exclusive cover and new English translation.
  • Tamaki Variant: A limited art-focused edition, with only 260 copies.
  • Deluxe Signed Collector's Edition: Only 250 copies produced.
  • Masterpiece Edition: A large-format, premium release with high-resolution art in its original size, including a companion book containing a new translation of Japanese lettering.
  • Signed Masterpiece Edition: Limited to 250 sets.
  • Signed Darth Vader Masterpiece Edition: Only 25 sets worldwide, combining the Masterpiece Edition with special Darth Vader features.

The standard edition of the manga will hit retail stores in summer 2026. However, Kickstarter backers will receive their copies ahead of the general release.

This special publication will retain Tamaki's original unaltered art in right-to-left orientation, complete with pencil marks and editorial notes typically omitted in printed versions. Notably, this marks Dark Horse's first in-house Kickstarter campaign for a manga.

Originally published in Japan by MediaWorks and Shufunotomo in 1997, this manga adaptation of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was translated into English by Dark Horse in 1998 and won an Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material in 1999.
