Complicated History of the Millennium Falcon

Ten years since the launch of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars continues to evolve its rich history. Marvel Comics has recently introduced a comic titled Han Solo – Hunt for the Falcon, which significantly alters a critical narrative element from The Force Awakens. This comic not only brings back beloved characters but also rewrites important aspects of the Millennium Falcon's backstory.

The Original Story

In The Force Awakens, fans were introduced to Rey and Finn, who encounter the Millennium Falcon on Jakku. The ship is depicted as junk, once lost by Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford. The backstory hints at a mystery regarding its disappearance, with Han expressing frustration over his search. During a conversation with Rey, he implies that he lost track of the ship, leading to Rey confidently proclaiming its theft history involving Unkar Plutt and Ducain.

The Comic's Reveal

Hunt for the Falcon, authored by Rodney Barnes with illustrations by Guru-eFX and Ramon Rosanas, acts as a prequel to the film. In this series, Han and Chewbacca embark on a quest to recover their cherished ship. While the comic presents enjoyable character interactions and a nostalgic chase, it ultimately contradicts the established events of the film.

A Contradictory Timeline

Throughout the comic's storyline, Han retraces the Falcon's theft lineage, including confrontations with Ducain and Plutt. However, the comic culminates on Jakku, where Han faces the truth about his ship but decides to leave it behind. This directly clashes with his attitude expressed in The Force Awakens, where he seems oblivious to the Falcon's whereabouts.

Additionally, a dream sequence in issue five introduces further timeline discrepancies. Han's memory shows him piloting the Falcon with family aboard during Imperial times, despite the Empire's fall coinciding with Ben Solo's birth. Such contradictions elevate confusion regarding the continuity of the Star Wars universe.

Implications for the Canon

Previous Star Wars comics have faced challenges aligning with established lore, yet Hunt for the Falcon poses more significant contradictions than typical tie-in issues. The comic's narrative aimed to bridge gaps but unfortunately undermines the cinematic elements it strove to complement.
