Star Wars Returns to Theaters in 2027

Disney has officially announced that the original Star Wars film, known as Episode IV: A New Hope, will return to theaters to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The much-anticipated release is scheduled for February 19, 2027, slightly earlier than previously expected.

The upcoming theatrical version promises to be a "newly restored" edition of the 1977 original release. This version is expected to resemble what was shown earlier this year at the Film on Film Festival in London.

Differences from the Special Edition

Fans of the franchise are aware that this original version presents several differences compared to the well-known Special Edition, which has been the primary version available since 1981. Notable changes include the ongoing debate surrounding the phrase "Han shot first," a topic that has remained prominent among fans.

George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, has long defended the Special Edition as his definitive vision for the film. In a 2004 interview, he emphasized:

"The Special Edition, that’s the one I wanted out there... I’m not going to spend... the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore."

New Insights from Lucas

Recently, Lucas has suggested that he may be more open to the original version's existence alongside the Special Edition. He stated, “Of course I’ve moved past it, I mean, I’ve got a life.” His comments hint at a possible relaxation of his once strict stance on the original release.

Future Screening Plans

While the initial announcement indicated that the film might debut on April 30, 2027, it's uncertain how long it will remain in theaters. There’s anticipation that it will still be available around May 4th, also known as Star Wars Day, possibly leading to even more celebratory plans.
