ININ Games announced an upgraded version of the acclaimed 2019 title, Shenmue III, ahead of the highly anticipated gamescom 2025 event. This enhanced edition will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo systems, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Notably, this marks the series' debut on Xbox and a Nintendo platform. Existing owners on PlayStation 4 or PC will have the opportunity to upgrade to this new version.

Shenmue III Enhanced is set to deliver significant improvements, including 4K textures, enhanced graphics and performance, and compatibility with technologies like DLSS and FSR. The upgrade will also introduce increased NPC density, a classic camera mode reminiscent of the original games, and various gameplay adjustments such as an optional stamina system, health restoration before battles, reduced in-game costs, and expanded quick-time event windows. Players can opt to disable these features if they prefer the classic gameplay experience.

The publishing rights for Shenmue III transferred to ININ Games last November. At that time, both ININ Games and YS-Net expressed their commitment to continuing the story of Shenmue, eyeing celebrations for the series' 25th anniversary alongside the fifth anniversary of Shenmue III.

Originally slated for release in 2017, Shenmue III faced multiple delays before its eventual debut in November 2019 on PS4 and PC. The series first burst onto the scene with its debut on the SEGA Dreamcast in Japan in 1999. Alongside the games, an anime adaptation titled Shenmue the Animation premiered in February 2022, created in collaboration with Crunchyroll and Adult Swim.
