Manga icon Rumiko Takahashi recently marked the 55th anniversary of the beloved character Doraemon with a delightful illustration. The artwork depicts Lum, a character from Takahashi's famed series Urusei Yatsura, celebrating the occasion with a towering, giant dorayaki birthday cake. Accompanying the vibrant image is a message noting that the Doraemon franchise is sharing a series of contributions from a host of manga artists as part of a countdown to the character's special day.

Doraemon, created by the renowned manga duo Fujiko Fujio, first made its debut in 1970 in Shogakukan's Gakunenbetsu Gakushū Zasshi. Following the split of the duo, the series continued under the stewardship of Fujiko F. Fujio (Hiroshi Fujimoto). Notably, Doraemon experienced an early anime adaptation in 1973, followed by a more extensive series that began airing in 1979. Remarkably, this long-running series is still producing new episodes today, having undergone a complete voice cast overhaul in 2005.

As fans from around the world come together to celebrate this iconic character, Takahashi’s artwork adds a layer of joy and nostalgia, reminding us of the enduring legacy of both Doraemon and its talented creators.
