A film adaptation of BioShock is currently in development at Netflix, and recent revelations indicate it will remain faithful to the game's original storyline. Producer Roy Lee has confirmed the adaptation will focus on the first BioShock game, ensuring that fans will see the iconic underwater city of Rapture brought to life on screen. With notable talent such as Francis Lawrence (known for The Hunger Games) directing and Michael Green (writer for Logan) handling the screenplay, expectations are high.

Lee stated in an interview with The Direct that Lawrence will shift focus to this project after wrapping up the Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, which is currently filming in Spain, anticipated for a November 2026 release. The screenplay is still in the refinement stages.

Netflix announced this movie in 2022, but updates have been sparse, leaving many fans wondering about its development. Earlier this year, Lawrence described the project as “tricky” yet noted it was finally in a “good place.”

One of the major challenges is capturing the atmosphere of Rapture, which was showcased in the game as a dynamic visual environment filled with flickering neon lights, decaying architecture, and iconic characters such as Big Daddies. The success of recent adaptations like The Last of Us and Twisted Metal demonstrates that translating these complex worlds into live-action can be achieved successfully.

Originally launched in 2007, BioShock is celebrated for its impactful storytelling, featuring Jack, a survivor who discovers the eerie underwater world of Rapture. While details on casting and release are still under wraps, Netflix aims to distribute the film worldwide, and with Lawrence and Green leading the creative team, there’s potential for a compelling adaptation that captures the essence of the original game.
