Mark Hamill Talks Joker Legacy and Return as Luke Skywalker
Mark Hamill discusses his iconic roles and future as the Joker.
Mark Hamill has become synonymous with two legendary characters in pop culture: Luke Skywalker and The Joker. While Hamill is primarily associated with Luke, his voice as the Clown Prince of Crime in Batman: The Animated Series and later works like Batman: The Killing Joke has made a lasting impression on fans. Recently, during a discussion with The Hollywood Reporter about his upcoming project, The Long Walk, Hamill shared insights into his experiences with both roles, expressing doubts about returning as The Joker. He recalls the moment he secured the part of Joker amid fans' skepticism regarding Michael Keaton's casting as Batman, leading him to believe he might not land the role as Luke Skywalker. However, with renewed confidence, he delivered an unforgettable performance.
For decades, Hamill voiced Joker, collaborating with Kevin Conroy's Batman. Following Conroy's passing in 2022, Hamill indicated he was done with the Joker character. He stated:
"When asked about new projects, my question was always, 'Is Kevin doing Batman?' If he’s in, I’m all for it."
As for future projects, Hamill confirmed he hasn’t been approached to return to the role.
Despite closing the door on Joker, Hamill returned as Luke Skywalker for The Mandalorian. He expressed initial reluctance about reprising his role in The Last Jedi but was motivated by his co-stars, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher’s participation. He recognized the significance of his appearance in The Mandalorian, describing it as a chance to finally portray Luke as a Master Jedi. “This was a wonderful opportunity,” he noted. Hamill praised the creative direction of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, acknowledging their deep understanding of the Star Wars universe.
Although Hamill may not voice the Joker again, he felt content having one last chance to embody Luke Skywalker, calling it an enriching experience.
