Korean Voice Acting Legend Hee-sun Kang Dies at 65
Hee-sun Kang, the voice of Misae Nohara in Crayon Shin Chan, has died at 65.
Hee-sun Kang, the veteran Korean voice actor who brought Misae Nohara to life in the beloved Korean dub of Crayon Shin Chan, has died at 65. She passed away on July 4 following a battle with colon cancer, which she had been fighting since 2021.
Kang's career spanned decades in the voice acting world, earning her recognition as one of Korea's most accomplished performers in the field. Beyond her iconic role as Shin-chan's mother, she lent her voice to Korean dubs of popular films and became a familiar presence to commuters across Seoul—she provided the subway system's station announcements. Her contributions to Korean voice acting were formally acknowledged when she received the KBS Voice Acting Award in 2005 and the Prime Minister's Commendation in 2018.
Health challenges forced Kang to step down from her role as Misae Nohara last year, marking the end of an era for fans who grew up hearing her voice on the show. Her son, Eun-seok Ahn, shared a tribute following her funeral, honoring her legacy in the industry.
Kang's passing marks a significant loss for Korean voice acting and the anime community that knew her work across generations.
