Junji Ito's Horror Anthology Heads to HBO Max This Fall
Junji Ito's horror anthology anime is coming to HBO Max this fall.
Junji Ito's unsettling visions are about to reach a global audience. Strange: Junji Ito's Tales for Sleepless Nights, a thirteen-episode anime series that premiered in Japan this summer, will land on HBO Max outside Japan this fall.
Each episode adapts one of Ito's stories, bringing his distinctive brand of psychological horror to the screen. The series already aired in Japan starting in July on TV Tokyo and BS TV Tokyo, but the international release marks the first major push to make his work accessible to Western viewers on a major streaming platform.
The production assembled a solid creative team behind the adaptation. Directors Atsuhiro Yamada, Yūta Shimotsu, and Ryōta Kondō helm the series, while writers Daisuke Hosaka and Tatsurō Inamoto handle the scripts. The sonic atmosphere gets a notable boost from the music choices: South Korean group IVE performs the opening theme "Jigsaw," while 10CM handles the closing track "The Darkest Night."
For those unfamiliar with Ito's work, the manga artist has spent decades crafting horror stories that burrow into the mind—body horror, existential dread, and the grotesque rendered in meticulous detail. His influence on horror extends far beyond comics, and this anime adaptation represents a significant moment for bringing his sensibilities to a streaming audience that may have only encountered his work through internet culture or scattered references.
