Jason Ritter Provides Exciting Update on DCU's Lanterns Series
Jason Ritter offers intriguing insights into the upcoming Lanterns series, confirming that filming is already halfway complete and teasing a comedic twist to his role as Billy Macon.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Jason Ritter, known for his roles in Parenthood and Raising Dion, shared exciting news about the much-anticipated Lanterns series, part of DC Studios’ expanding universe. Ritter, who will portray Billy Macon, disclosed that production has reached its halfway point, having completed four episodes out of eight. “We’ve shot four episodes so far and we’re about to start shooting episodes three and four,” he stated, adding that the filming is being executed out of order but remains a highly enjoyable experience. He praised the show’s writing and hinted at bringing a touch of silliness into an otherwise gritty, detective-style drama.
Ritter's character, described as a "good-looking charmer," is intricately tied to familial expectations and the small-town reputation he leverages. Notably, speculation within the fan community suggests that the Macons could be linked to the infamous Hand family, associated with William Hand, or Black Hand, a pivotal figure in DC's Blackest Night storyline. Should this theory hold water, Ritter’s role may have deeper implications for fans familiar with the comics.
The series is set to feature Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the iconic roles of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, who will navigate a murder mystery rooted in the heartland of America. Nathan Fillion is also slated to appear as Guy Gardner, contributing an exciting dynamic to the mix. The ensemble additionally stars Ulrich Thomsen, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, and Sherman Augustus.
Directing the pilot episodes is James Hawes, known for his work on Doctor Who and Black Mirror, which promises to lend a compelling visual narrative to the show. As described by James Gunn, Lanterns will blend cosmic superhero lore with a grounded detective storyline, akin to a terrestrial-based True Detective that integrates established Green Lantern characters.
While the release date is set for early 2026 on HBO, the production efforts and crew involvement are already generating significant buzz among fans eager for a fresh take on superhero narratives.
