Guillermo del Toro's Justice League Dark Plans

Guillermo del Toro recently shared insights about his Justice League Dark film that never materialized during a conversation with Josh Horowitz. Before the project was shelved amid the reorganization of DC Studios, del Toro had envisioned an exciting cast and plot for this darker take on the superhero genre.

Casting Choices

Del Toro revealed that while he had not begun casting yet, he had his sights set on Doug Jones for the role of Deadman. He believed that Jones's physicality and mannerisms would have been perfect for the character. Del Toro emphasized his attachment to the screenplay, expressing his admiration: "I loved that screenplay... it brought everyone in effortlessly.'

The Plot

In his plans, John Constantine was set to be the leading antihero. Del Toro described the storyline as compelling, with significant villains like the Floronic Man. He remarked on the in-depth treatment of characters such as Swamp Thing and highlighted a memorable sequence involving the team visiting Bruce Wayne’s office to secure a private plane.

Potential Future

After discussing his project, del Toro acknowledged that he hadn’t broached the idea of revisiting Justice League Dark with DC Studios' co-head, James Gunn, but noted that he would be open to the conversation. "I think [Gunn is] remarkably smart... I really enjoy the way he's viewing the universe," he said. He also praised the design of elaborate set pieces planned for the film, recalling an exciting chase scene where Deadman could jump between bodies.

The Legacy of Justice League Dark

The Justice League Dark, a team comprised of supernatural heroes, first appeared in a 2011 comic book series written by Peter Milligan. It served as an introduction for characters like Deadman and Constantine into the wider DC Universe.

What’s Next for Del Toro?

Though Justice League Dark is unlikely to be revived, del Toro has exciting projects in the pipeline, including a film titled Fury, which promises a thrilling, violent narrative akin to his previous work. Additionally, he is collaborating with Netflix on an adaptation of The Boy in the Iron Box, featuring a star-studded cast. This tale follows mercenaries encountering monstrous threats after a plane crash in the Tian Shan mountains.
