Greg Rucka Reveals Suicidal Thoughts Due to DC's Toxic Environment
Greg Rucka reveals his struggles with a toxic work environment at DC.
Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka has spoken candidly about the debilitating toxic work environment he faced while at DC Comics under the leadership of Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio. In a recent interview, he opened up about his struggles, stating that the negative treatment he experienced left him contemplating suicide. Rucka, known for his significant contributions to both Marvel and DC, described his time at DC as one filled with betrayal and manipulation.
He recounted, "That was me at my absolute lowest at DC... I was made promises repeatedly, and they were always broken." His account highlights a toxic atmosphere that persisted until DiDio's departure from the company. Rucka specifically noted how manipulation from both Johns and DiDio impacted his mental health, saying, "When I left in 2009, I was mentally ill. I was severely depressed and suicidal. I nearly took my life."
After leaving, Rucka's mental state was severely affected, attributing it directly to the treatment he received from 2006 to 2009. Fortunately, he noted that his recent interactions with DC feel different; the atmosphere has improved significantly, fostering a healthier and more collaborative environment.
Rucka's insights extend beyond his personal experiences, touching on issues like antisemitism in the comic book industry and the possibility of future collaborations with Ed Brubaker. Notably, the landscape of DC Comics has changed considerably since the exits of key figures like DiDio.
