Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, recently disclosed that his health deteriorated during the concluding phases of the series’ publication. In a heartfelt message, he expressed gratitude to Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, for offering significant support during this challenging period by recommending a hospital.

In June 2024, Akutami was hospitalized for an appendectomy, which necessitated a brief hiatus following the release of chapter 262. This interruption was part of a series of delays experienced during the manga’s final arc, leading to concerns among fans about the pacing and resolution of key plot points. The series ultimately concluded with chapter 271, achieving a remarkable milestone of 100 million copies in circulation since its debut in 2018.

In his statement, Akutami mentioned his recovery after following Oda's advice and his desire to express appreciation through contributions to the One Piece franchise, particularly in the form of illustrations for the One Piece Card Game. He reflected on the creative process as a fulfilling and novel experience.

This revelation has sparked discussions among fans, particularly regarding the perceived rushed ending of Jujutsu Kaisen, with some attributing potential narrative shortcomings to Akutami's health struggles.
