Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Announcement

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja revealed during the "State of Play Japan" livestream that the highly anticipated remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly will launch on March 12, 2026. This version will be available for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam.

About the Game

The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they navigate a mysterious village that has disappeared from maps. As they uncover the supernatural elements surrounding them, the sisters face vengeful spirits while striving to escape a hidden ritual. Separate from her sister, Mio must rely on Camera Obscura to capture and seal otherworldly entities, revealing truths from the village's dark past.

Koei Tecmo emphasizes that this remake is a complete overhaul of the original game, featuring improvements in graphics, audio, and gameplay mechanics. The original Fatal Frame II premiered on the PlayStation 2 in 2003, followed by an Xbox release in 2004. A Wii remake, known as Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, launched in 2012, though it did not reach North America.

Franchise Background

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, the fourth main series entry, debuted digitally in English in March 2023. Originally released on the Wii in 2008 without an English version, it marked a significant expansion in the series. Following that, an updated version of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, the fifth title, came out in October 2021 for various platforms.

Fans of the horror genre can look forward to the chilling atmosphere and unique gameplay that the Fatal Frame series is known for.
