Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake set for early 2026 release.
Koei Tecmo revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct that the beloved horror title, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, is set to receive a remake for the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for early 2026. This eagerly awaited remake will also be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam.
The story revolves around twin sisters, Mio and Mayu Amakura, who become lost in a mysterious village that has seemingly vanished. As they face terrifying spirits and work to uncover the village's dark secrets, Mio must make use of the Camera Obscura, a device capable of capturing and sealing malevolent entities. Her journey will lead her deeper into the village, where she will encounter the tragic truth behind a forbidden ritual.
Koei Tecmo promises a complete overhaul of the original game, boasting enhanced graphics and audio, along with improved controls and gameplay mechanics. The original Fatal Frame II debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2003 and was later made available on Xbox. A Wii version titled Project Zero 2: Wii Edition was released in 2012, though it never saw a North American launch.
The franchise continues to grow, following the recent digital release of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse in March 2023. Originally released on the Wii in 2008, this title marked the fourth main entry in the series. The fifth installment, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, saw an enhanced release for multiple platforms in October 2021.
For fans of Japanese horror and atmospheric storytelling, the upcoming Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake promises to deliver an unforgettable experience.
