Exciting Developments in Marvel's X-Men Reboot
Director Jake Schreier shares an exhilarating update on the X-Men reboot.
The X-Men film franchise is set for a significant revival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with director Jake Schreier revealing that work on the much-anticipated reboot is underway. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Schreier expressed his excitement about the project, although he refrained from disclosing specific story details.
“I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve started work on X-Men, and that’s obviously very, very exciting,”
He noted.
Schreier's announcement comes shortly after his appointment as director and follows his recent work on the MCU's Phase Five finale, Thunderbolts. Despite receiving a strong critical response with an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s box office performance was reportedly underwhelming. Nevertheless, Schreier believes the lessons learned from Thunderbolts will be invaluable for his approach to the X-Men ensemble, particularly regarding balancing action with emotional, character-driven scenes. He remarked on the challenges of maintaining this balance, indicating a growing confidence in managing such large-scale productions.
The reboot promises to usher in a new era for Marvel’s mutants, aligning with a broader reset of the franchise planned after Avengers: Secret Wars. Although details about the reboot remain closely guarded, Marvel president Kevin Feige has hinted that the film will target a "youth-focused" audience, suggesting a recasting of several beloved characters from the previous 20th Century Fox era. Feige emphasized the importance of youthful dynamics, reflecting similar character interactions seen in Thunderbolts, aiming to evoke the spirit of the original comics.
This reboot marks another attempt to refresh the X-Men franchise, which previously explored the stories of younger characters in X-Men: First Class. While films such as First Class and its sequel received critical acclaim, subsequent installments like Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix faced significant backlash from audiences and critics alike.
Before the reboot, original X-Men characters will be reintroduced in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, where they will confront the formidable Victor Von Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. This new narrative will feature notable figures from the original franchise, including Professor X, Magneto, and Mystique, alongside Channing Tatum's Gambit. Doomsday, currently in production in the U.K., is set to be filmed alongside Secret Wars, although no specific release dates for the X-Men reboot have been confirmed.
