Crunchyroll Responds to Subtitle Issues Affecting Fans
Crunchyroll addresses recent subtitle issues affecting users.
Crunchyroll Clarifies Recent Subtitle Problems
Crunchyroll has released an official statement regarding the recent subtitle issues affecting some of its Fall 2025 titles. Users reported changes in font types, sizes, and formatting, sparking speculation about potential provider changes or the introduction of AI in their subtitling process.
Internal Failures, Not AI
In response to inquiries from specialized media, a Crunchyroll spokesperson confirmed that the issues stemmed from internal system failures rather than any changes in their subtitling procedures. “In recent days, some users experienced delays in accessing desired content and subtitle problems in certain series. These issues were caused by internal system problems—not by any alterations in how we create subtitles, nor through new providers or artificial intelligence,” the company stated.
The statement added, “These internal issues have been fully resolved. Quality subtitles are essential to what makes watching anime on Crunchyroll special. They connect fans worldwide with the heart of each story, and we take that responsibility very seriously.”
Rumors of Software Change
On social media, some users speculated that Crunchyroll had replaced the Aegisub software with the Israeli platform OOONA for subtitle creation, supposedly starting with the Fall 2025 season. However, the company did not confirm or deny which software they have previously used or are currently using for subtitling their catalog.
Internal Restructuring at Crunchyroll
The company has undergone significant changes over the past year. In August, reports indicated layoffs across various departments, alongside personnel reassignments and the establishment of new engineering centers in the U.S., Mexico, and India, aimed at enhancing innovation and strengthening technological transformation.
Crunchyroll operates independently under a partnership between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex. In 2021, Funimation, also owned by Sony, completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll for $1.175 billion, consolidating its physical releases under a single brand.
