At the Aniplex Online Fest, the new original anime 'Inherit the Winds' (Kaze wo Tsugumono) was officially announced. Set against the backdrop of the Bakumatsu era in Kyoto, it tells the story of a soldier who wakes without memories and is saved by the famed Shinsengumi member, Sōji Okita. Renamed Junsuke Tachikawa, he embarks on a rejuvenated life among the Mibu soldiers.

The anime promises a dramatic historical setting, framing a man devoid of memory as he forges his destiny alongside the Shinsengumi. Beyond action, it aims to delve into themes of human connection, loyalty, and the heft of identity in a conflict-riddled Japan.

Key Staff:

  • Original Story: Yutaka Narui and Aniplex (with collaboration from Azuki Mashiba)
  • Director: Tomohiro Kawamura
  • Animation Studio: Live2D Creative Studio and Drive Inc.
  • Screenplay: Yutaka Narui
  • Character Design: Fumi Ebina
  • Music: Shigeru Kishida

Yutaka Narui, a playwright and founder of Caramel Box, has previously explored Shinsengumi-themed works in his theater productions. Interestingly, one of his plays also carried the title Kaze wo Tsugumono, albeit spelled differently. This anime, however, is classified formally as an original project, offering a fresh perspective on the legendary samurai group.

Are you excited about an anime that intertwines history and drama with the legacy of the Shinsengumi? Let us know in the comments!
